No, I bring my own clean dust sheets to cover the area around your fireplace. The fireplace is covered with a sealed ‘sweep-through sheet’ ( see the main image on this website ) and I use a powerful vacuum with high-efficiency filtration to keep dust and soot to an absolute minimum.

Your chimney needs regular sweeping to remove soot created by burning solid fuels such as wood or coal. Chimneys where soot is allowed to build-up are at risk from chimney fires which can be very dangerous to your safety, and that of your neighbours.

Gas fires don’t produce soot or particulates, but the chimney can still become blocked by a mixture of mixture of dust from the brick lining and mortar joints which gas fires tend to dry-out over time. Add to this the usual combination of leaves, feathers and cobwebs which can slow-down the gasses produced by your gas fire. So yes - gas fires do need sweeping for safety.

It is recommended that chimneys in use should be swept annually. If you are using it regularly in winter, a mid-season sweep is also recommended.

Woodburning stoves are much more efficient than open fires, but they still produce soot. This can build-up in your chimney liner and cause a fire, which apart from the obvious danger, will mean you need a new liner fitted.
